Puerto Peñasco opens Phase 1 starts construction Phase 2
AMLO inaugurated the first phase of the Puerto Peñasco photovoltaic power plant, Mexico’s first state-operated, large-scale PV project, the property of national power company CFE and the state of Sonora.
Built in 11 months, Phase 1 brings online 120MW of solar power generation as well as the transmission line connecting the plant to the national power grid. A second phase set to add another 300MW started construction in September last year and is set to come online in June 2024.
More phases are planned, and once completed, Puerto Peñasco will feature solar panels covering some 2,000 hectares generating a combined capacity of 1GW, more than any PV plant now operating in the Americas and the fifth largest worldwide.
