Uber receives FinTech license
Uber received authorization to operate as a wallet (IFPE) in Mexico, although it remains unknown how the ride-hailing app plans to leverage the new authorization in Mexico. While there are no official numbers, press reports indicate Uber has at least 250,000 drivers in Mexico and 8 million users, suggesting it already has access to a platform of FinTech users and a large database. Currently, in Mexico, Uber users can pay via the platform with credit or debit cards or in cash, which is registered on the platform so Uber can charge its commission like other card-paying rides. One possible idea is that Uber will seek to offer loans like its ride-hailing counterpart Didi, which has offered more than 5 million personal loans in Mexico since 2021.
