After a six-year, Trump-induced hiatus, the presidents of Mexico, the US and Canada kick off Monday a new edition of the North American Leadership Summit (NALS), often quipped “the Three Amigos” gathering.
After a trip to El Paso, Texas, and Juárez, Chihuahua, Sunday to see first-hand the migrant crisis on the border and meet with officials on both sides, US President Joe Biden arrived Sunday night to Mexico City, notably to the little-used AIFA airport, one of four flagship projects undertaken by Mexico’s President Andrés Manuel López Obrador (AMLO) and still mostly uncompleted.
Biden’s trip to El Paso is seen as paying attention to political pressure from both the opposition Republicans and even some fellow Democrats to become more active in addressing the chaos at the border and develop an effective legal framework for migration moving forward.
