The Tesla Affair
A large-scale Tesla electric vehicle (EV) assembly widely believed to be headed to Monterrey, Nuevo León state, was reported considering instead a site in the state of Mexico to reflect preferences of state-owned utility CFE.
The move may push Tesla’s new Gigafactory more than 800 km farther away from the US-Mexico border and deliver massive investment to the state of Mexico, the nation’s most populous state, located in central Mexico and surrounding most of Mexico City.
Tesla founder and CEO Elon Musk on two occasions last year visited Nuevo León state, a northern hub of industry and wealth in Mexico and bastion of political opposition to Mexican President Andrés Manuel López Obrador (AMLO).
