The Tesla Affair  

• A large-scale Tesla electric vehicle (EV) assembly widely believed to be headed to Monterrey, Nuevo León state, was reported considering instead a site in the state of Mexico to reflect preferences of state-owned utility CFE. 

• The move may push Tesla’s new Gigafactory more than 800 km farther away from the US-Mexico border and deliver massive investment to the state of Mexico, the nation’s most populous state, located in central Mexico and surrounding most of Mexico City. 

• Tesla founder and CEO Elon Musk on two occasions last year visited Nuevo León state, a northern hub of industry and wealth in Mexico and bastion of political opposition to Mexican President Andrés Manuel López Obrador (AMLO).
